| Sophia was the youngest daughter of Sir
George Nares. In 1792 she married D'Arcy Preston Esq., of
Askham, Bryan Hall in Yorkshire, who was a Lieutenant in the Navy. As a result
of the family's connections with Lord St Vincent, he accompanied him in
his own ship to the West Indies in 1794 and on the taking of Martinique
was sent home with the despatches. Following this he was promoted
to Master and Commander and in 1796 was made Port Captain at Whitby,
close to the estates he had then inherited from his father. He
eventually became an Admiral.
They had five sons and two daughters, one of whom, Anne, married her first cousin, Edward Probyn Nares! Their third son, William (d1851), was a Captain in the RN and lived in Sussex |
