The elder son of Ramsay "Llewelyn" Nares. He was born on 27th June 1922 and educated at Marlborough and went on to read Classics at Brasenose College, Oxford. His studies were interrupted when he was called up during WW2 and joined the 3rd Battalion of the Coldstream Guards. He saw action in Italy and was mentioned in despatches.
He was wounded at Salerno and wrote a graphic letter to his family, which can be read here. After the War he returned to his studies with the aim of becoming a diplomat, but tragically died of polio on 22nd July 1947 at The Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading.
