The eldest son of David McCance, he was born at Wellington Place, Belfast, on 23rd Sept 1840.  He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, and got his B.A. in 1861.  He never married and died on 14th Apr 1871 and was buried at Drumbeg, where there is an inscription on the Memorial erected by John McCance (b.1772).
