Angus McCance  (1928-1980)

Angus and his twin sister, Nathalie, were the only children of Joseph McCance and Phyllis Turner, (though she had a daughter, Jill, from her previous marriage to Ted Quilter).

He was born in Edinburgh on 20th Sep 1928, ten minutes before his twin sister.  He was educated at Rugby School, like his father, and went into the Army where he served with the Greys.  He was an accomplished horseman and while in the Army he trained for the British Olympic team.

One duty, while in the Army, that his charm was well suited to, was to explain to a young Queen Elizabeth the workings of some piece of military equipment, as recorded below.  Another duty was to be one of the observers of Britain's first atomic bomb test.  Tragically, proper precautions were not taken to protect personnel, and the radiation caused the cancer which brought about his untimely death on 20th Mar 1980.

He left the Army in 1957 and worked for a year for British Ropes.  After that joined Scottish Brewers as a Sales Manager and then ran the Scottish and Newcastle Breweries Office in London before taking over their wine operations in Edinburgh.

He married Anne Stirling-Wylie and lived in Wimbledon.  They had three daughters, Lucy  (1955), Amanda  (1957) and Sarah  (1962).
