Maria was the third daughter of William Henry Nares.  In 1856 she married John Gordon-Cuming-Skene Esq., (1827-?) and had one son, Alexander.  Sadly, she died in childbirth, or shortly afterwards, but her son survived.  He went on to become a Lieutenant in the Royal Horse Guards and married Ada Wilson and they had a son, John.
