Drombeg is the three-piece folk band that reformed after the folding of Coleman's Favourite during the summer of '99. The greater part of their repertoire consists of songs and dances from the celtic tradition, but they do several numbers from continents far and wide.
John Edmonds (guitar, bodhran & vocals) was solo floor singer at the Bournemouth and Poole Folk Song Club from '64 to '67. He then ran the Starlight Folk Club, Christchurch, with Jim Melvin and in '69 he moved on to the Wessex Traditional Folk Song Club (with The Biddles, The Merlins and The Badgers) till '74. After a break of a few years he got back together with Jim Melvin and from '86 to '88 they played together as a duo. From '88 to '99 they became Coleman's Favourite, with the addition of Stuart Austin (fiddle) and Dick Irish (Bass) later to be replaced by Andy Smart. Jim Melvin (guitar, banjo, bazooki & vocals) started playing with John Edmonds at the Starlight Club in '69. In '74 he went to play with Gentle Folk, among other bands, but found himself back with John in '86, since when they have remained together, first as a duo then in Coleman's Favourite and now Drombeg. Susan Nares joined them in 1996, as they were looking for a whistle player to add another dimension to the band's sound. She also plays fife, flute, recorder electronic bagpipes(!) and percussion as well as doing solo and harmony vocals. (There is more about her musical interests on the page you have just come from). They are working on material for a CD, and you will hear about it first here! |
