Piafricano (1997) is a set of four pieces based on African drum patterns, polyrhythms and melodic intervals. The inspiration for these pieces began with a drumming workshop weekend with Godfrey Mensah, a brilliant Ghanaian master drummer, which led me to a deeper exploration of African music. Not having found a pianist brave enough to tackle all four movements, I have plans to develop them for piano and solo instrument. The pieces are named: I. Rondo Djembe, II. Xhoxhalosa, III. Thumb Piano, IV. Va Midzo. Africa in Colour (1998) is a set of four pieces written for my student flute trio to perform at the 1999 Bournemouth Music Festival. Like the Djembe Suite, these pieces were influenced by my research into African music, and particularly melodic intervals and ostinati. The four pieces are: I. Pink Flamingo, II. Yellow Desert, III. Emerald Forest, IV. Blue Lagoon. The Planet Song Cycle (1994) for children's choir was written for the 'end of year' whole school production at New Milton Junior School in Hampshire. All 350 children took part, with a main choir of about 150. There were songs for each of the planets, the moon and the sun (and planet X) which each class interspersed with dramatic cameos of their own invention. Connemarra Lullabye (1995) for choir (SAB) and synthesizer was written for the Coda choir, which Susan runs for the Coda Music Centre. Steps on Water (1999) for flute and piano was first performed at Pyt House, near Tisbury in Wiltshire, as part of a concert devised by Maxwell Steer, who accompanied Susan on the piano. It is the first in a series of pieces exploring our spiritual journey through life. Four Seasons Rain (1995/6) for flute and synthesizer is a set of four pieces for bamboo flute and synthesizer, which were written with music for film in the back of my mind. They are short evocative pieces, one for each season; I. Spring Showers, II. Summer Rain, III. Autumn Mists, IV. Winter Snow. Dances for Wind Quintet (1996) was written for members of the instrumental team at St Swithun's School in Winchester. It was first performed in an open air concert near Winchester. Waiting For... (1995) was composed jointly with Bill Martin and submitted to the Unknown Public, who published it in their innovative CD format magazine for avant-garde music. The brief was to write a one minute piece on the theme of "repetition and the life and works of Samuel Beckett". Susan has also written about twenty songs for lyricist Barry Lowe, though none have been published (to our knowledge!), and arranged numerous songs for the folk band she plays with as well as for her students. |
